HGTV’s Color of the Month Is Fresh and Bright

After the hectic holiday season, it’s finally time to get back into the swing of things. New Year’s resolutions aside, January is a great time to reboot, reorganize and re-energize your space. That’s why for our January Color of the Month, a fresh, fruity hue with just enough brightness is our pick. It’s…Lemon Zest!

This sunny yellow hue won our hearts with its mood-lifting qualities. Slightly more subtle than Pantone’s spring 2014 yellow choice, Freesia, it’s still bright enough to bring life to post-holiday interiors. Take down the tinsel and bring on the lemony accents! (And the lemon curd.) Read on to see why we chose this hue + the best ways to use it.

“This color looks (and smells) like a fresh start to the New Year,” says assistant editor Kayla. Celebrate citrus season with a lemon wreath — it’s the perfect replacement for your holiday version. Or add lemons to winter floral arrangements for a bright, aromatic accent.

Yellow Front Door From HGTV Magazine
“What everyone needs at the beginning of the year is the exact opposite of what they see outside, as in dreary weather, slushy, dirty snow and dull colors,” says HGTV Magazine online editor Alyssa. A bright yellow accent — like the front door of Young House Love bloggers John and Sherry Petersik — helps you look forward to spring. Or, go all-out yellow like designer Brian Patrick Flynn did in this breakfast nook for a bigger mood-booster. Just try to frown while you look at this:

Every member of the color team wasn’t on board with this month’s yellow pick — editorial director Lili was lobbying for a cool blue, instead. Though it was a close second in the final vote, it looks fantastic next to our winning hue in this vintage-style bathroom.
